Wired power connector

  • Does anyone know where I can buy a pre-wired power connector for the espruino?

I purchased the adafruit one (http://www.adafruit.com/products/261) as linked from the espruino site (http://www.espruino.com/EspruinoBoard), but it's too small :(

    Cheers,

    Rob

  • Eww, I thought the adafruit ones were okay.

And, yeah, I also had the same problem... some info here http://forum.espruino.com/conversations/879

There are too fucking many kinds of stupid little connectors that look identical in a photo. There seem to be many connectors all known by the same letters.

  • Crossbreeding?

  • Could be, but if they're breeding I'd expect to find more connector parts than I remembered when I look in the drawer, not less...

What came to my mind was adventure... "You are looking at a wall of funny little connectors, all different"

  • LOL, you might be almost as old as I am :)

  • Thanks for the links

  • Hi, Sorry about that - do you have a pic of the Adafruit connector you got sent?

I wonder if they sent you the wrong thing...

The page there says it's a 'PH' connector, and even links to the other half which is identical to the one on the Espruino board.

  • Hey Gordon,

I bought the item from makersify in the UK who claim to sell the adafruit one (http://makersify.com/products/adafruit-jst-2-pin-cable).

The picture is correct, but the item is too small and doesn't have the ridge on the back.
    Photo of item sent attached.

It seems the adafruit connector looks right, but is a different JST connector in reality. Makersify have been less than helpful in finding out what the problem is, unfortunately.

    Rob

  • Hi, Thanks!

So you mean the picture on Adafruit/Makersify's site seems to be of the connector that would fit, but yours isn't the same? Real shame that Makersify aren't helping - I was under the impression that they were pretty good.

What's the distance between the two holes for pins? It's hard to measure but it should be 2mm - if it's not then it's definitely not the advertised PH connector.

  • Hi Rob
You need the JST PH series (2mm pitch). Probably you got the ZH or GH series, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JST_connector .

  • @Gordon, indeed the picture looks right, but I can confirm the connector has a 1.25mm pitch :(

  • @Gordon You should offer battery connectors w/wires on them as one of the kickstarter addons when the time comes for that - it seems this is a common problem. (as I understand it, the Pico has unpopulated pads for the same kind of connector on it, right?)

  • Or perhaps a bulk buy from somewhere? :)

  • @Rob looks like you've been sent the GH connector then. Personally I'd send Makersify the link to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JST_connector and would ask if they could send you the PH connector that was advertised.

The distributors should be able to stock the connectors just fine - digitalmeans sells them in packs of 20 for just 12p each, so would seem like a good bet. I'm just checking with Matt there if they really are correct and I'll let you know.

I'll have a think about offering the connectors to the KickStarter backers - while it's handy, there's going to be quite a lot of work involved in packing everything up!

  • I paid nearly that amount for 1 connector :) Perhaps I can sell the extra ones to makersify....

  • Quick update: Matt from DigitalMeans got back to me, he's tried the connectors he sells and confirms that they fit (see photo). Not only that, but he'll now be giving one away for free with every Espruino board he sells!

Also while trying to find this thread again I noticed this one where someone ordered the exact same connector you did (but from Adadfruit) and it works - so looks like Makersify has got their stock confused.

  • Makersify are looking into it...

  • Makersify have re-stocked and sent me a new connector and this time it's right!
