Bluetooth stopped working

  • From out of the blue, Bluetooth stopped working. No update and no apps added prior to it stopping. Here is a breakdown

    • firmware is 2.12
    • Bluetooth is just a grey symbol
    • reboot shows the ->Bluetooth at the bottom
    • tried load no apps, no connection available
    • try to connect from gadget bridge. Also tried to connect with web site, no connection available
    • I factory reset the watch, no connection available.
    • restarted my phone, no connection available

I had seen others with this issue so tried those first. Still no bueno :(

  • tried load no apps, no connection available

    You mean like this? https://www.espruino.com/Bangle.js2#resetting-without-loading-any-code

Does it *still show ->Bluetooth even if you do that?

  • loading with no apps does not show >Bluetooth, it just shows >. But I can't get the app site nor the web ide to recognize it. The sites just keep spinning and looking for a device

  • Ok, thanks - that is odd. What about if you reboot to the bootloader (DFU) mode and try and connect with NRF toolbox? https://www.espruino.com/Bangle.js2#android-ios-app

Is your Bangle one of the KickStarter ones?

  • Yes, it is a Kickstarter one.

Nope, ide won't connect in bootloader move either. There is also an error that happens when the bootloader times out and restarts. Not sure if that helps

  • Also the >Bluetooth didn't show up after reboot from the bootloader

  • Exact same issue here, also got my watch from the kickstarter and can't connect :(

  • @user139891 the IDE won't connect to the Bangle in bootloader mode (unless you do it via the flasher menu) - did you try connecting with the NRF Toolbox app?

And have you definitely tried connecting from a different device?

@user141797 have you definitely tried the steps above? When did it stop working, or have you never been able to connect?

I have seen one or two watches where bluetooth stopped working, however by far the vast majority of issues are software related - either turning bluetooth off in settings, having the Bangle paired with a device's OS or even just the device you're connecting with needing a restart.

  • Yes, I have tried everything too. I have to admit that I don't know exactly when it stopped working. I was able to connect to the watch via Bluetooth, but that was probably 2 weeks ago.I also tried using the NRF toolbox, but unfortunately I couldn't find the watch there. I also tried using the NRF Toolbox, but I couldn't find the watch there.

  • Was able to attempt second device using nrf toolbox, also does not connect and device cannot find the bangle. It is weird that this came out of the blue. I had not updated my bangle for a couple weeks. It just suddenly lost the ability to connect.

Both devices I have attempted to connect to have been reset multiple times

  • @Gordon is there anything else to do about losing connection?

  • @user139891 if you can't connect to the bootloader with NRF toolbox, and you tried more than one device this sounds like a hardware failure. I'll ask Christine to get in touch with you by email about a replacement.

I also tried using the NRF toolbox, but unfortunately I couldn't find the watch there. I also tried using the NRF Toolbox, but I couldn't find the watch there.

@user141797 I don't understand what you mean here? Did you definitely boot it up in Bootloader mode (showing the DFU START message) and then tried to search with NRF Toolbox? And did you try to connect to it with more than once device? It's been known that sometimes PCs/phones/etc will need a power cycle to detect devices again.

  • @Gordon Yes, I have tried to connect to the NRF Toolbox. I ordered two watches from Kickstarter, the other watch is from a friend of mine. I can connect to my friend's watch without any problems, but unfortunately not to mine. I have also tried to connect to my watch with several devices.

  • Ok, thanks - I'll ask Christine to drop you a line too then.

  • Hi, I'm having the same problem - bluetooth has stopped working
not sure when it stopped, but I updated on Tuesday, but didn't notice that it wasn't connecting until Wednesday

I was getting the ->Bluetooth error, but I've reset back to factory settings and that has disappeared.
    I'm now getting a
HEALTH ERR! Already written! message after it reboots

    It's from the kickstarter batch
I can't connect Phone, Laptop, PC or via DFU
    Firmware is version 2.12

Do you need anymore info ?

  • I was getting the ->Bluetooth error

That's not an error. If you get that after you've done https://www.espruino.com/Bangle.js2#resetting-without-loading-any-code then it actually shows that bluetooth is working and a device is connecting to the Bangle (just maybe not the one you intended!).

but I updated on Tuesday, but didn't notice that it wasn't connecting until Wednesday

You mean you updated via https://banglejs.com/apps/ ? Not that you did a firmware update?

How did you test with the DFU connection? Was it with NRF Connect and the watch showing something like on the screen above?

  • I've tried with the DFU and the NRF Connect app - and it's working again

I can now connect via my PC and Phone (GadgetBridge).

I don't know what's changed but all seems fine now

  • Great!

Just a note to others: We've shipped nearly 5000 Bangle.js 2s, and less than 0.1% of those have developed issues with Bluetooth. It's easy to look at posts like this where 2 people had problems and think that your Bangle must have developed the same hardware issue, but it's far more likely it's just some configuration/software problem :)
