I think this is because you're using a newer firmware on the ESP8266 - there's a post about someone else having issues with it somewhere else on the forum too :( The one the module is designed for is
0018000902-AI03- if you flash that onto the ESP8266 then it'll almost certainly work.However it should be possible to tweak the existing driver to work with the new ESP8266 firmware - I'll see what can be done with that when I get some time, but if you want to get stuck in then the source is here and you can probably get a much clearer idea of what's going on by calling
wifi.at.debug()to dump the commands and responses.
