Is your board powered from the Mac's USB? Try powering it from a wall supply or something that isn't connected to a computer.
When Espruino detects it has a USB connection, it uses that for communications instead of Bluetooth - leaving Bluetooth unresponsive.
Or if you were to connect via USB as well as Bluetooth and type Serial1.println("Hello") then it might appear on Bluetooth?
