So C15 is one of the pins used for an external crystal...

That means if we're using a watch crystal to get decent timekeeping, we can't use C15 for something else. Is this correct?

Yep, that's it... Otherwise it's fine to use, but C13-C15 can't supply quite as much current.

Gaah! What a pain! (it happens to be very inconvenient for me to lose that pin, as it's in the middle of a keypad connector, which I can't really move out of the way)

I guess you could cut the track and then wire another pin up in place?
