Bluetooth not working

Posted on
  • I just received my new BangleJS2 (to replace the old one that got physically damaged). Unfortunately, I cannot get Bluetooth to work.

In Settings, I have BLE = on, Programmable = on, HID = off. I then tried scanning for the device in Espruino Web IDE (on two computers) and in the nRF Connect on my Android phone. The Bangle does not appear in any of the scans.

I tried performing Factory Reset and Clean Boot from the Settings menu with no effect.

I would really appreciate any advice. Thank you so much.

  • Hi,

sorry to hear this. Would you please try a factory reset with these instructions and let us know.

Also, which firmware version are you running? When and where did you buy your Bangle.js v2?

    Thanks!
    Cheers,

  • Thank you very much for getting back to me on this!

Firmware 2v23.9. Obviously, with Bluetooth not working, I am unable to connect to the watch and upload a new firmware.

I have already performed factory reset with no effect. I tried again, this time following the linked instructions, and it did not seem to help again.

    shop.espruino.com order #11244 placed 14/07/2024.

  • Hi, sorry to hear this. When the watch is booted, what colour is the Bluetooth widget in the top right?

What if you put it into DFU bootloader mode, and try scanning with NRF Connect there, looking for a device called 'DfuTarg'?

The thing is, we check Bluetooth as part of sending the watch out - the way we do the programming/testing now the watch wouldn't have had any of the JS files on it if Bluetooth hadn't worked when we shipped it out.

So if Bluetooth has stopped working, it would have had to have broken in transit, which while not impossible is pretty unlikely so I'd like to make sure we exhaust all other possibilities.

  • Hi Gordon,

Thanks for getting back to me.

When the watch is booted, the Bluetooth widget in the top right is grey. I also tried putting it into DFU bootloader mode by following these steps:

    1. Held the button down until the equal signs started animating across the screen.
    2. Released the button and confirmed that the message "DFU START" appeared at the top of the screen.

After entering DFU bootloader mode, I scanned with NRF Connect, but I didn't see a device called 'DfuTarg' or anything similar.

Given that Bluetooth was confirmed working before shipping, it's indeed puzzling. Is there anything else I can try to troubleshoot this issue?

    Thank you for your assistance.

    Best,
    Evgeny

  • Thanks for checking that, that doesn't sound good - and do you think you could try putting your phone into airplane mode for a few seconds then out again (or ideally rebooting it) and check again just in case?

You'd be amazed at how often issues the phone's bluetooth gets confused.

But if it's still an issue then we'll get you a replacement. Sorry for the inconvenience - it is extremely rare there are issues like this.

  • Hi Gordon,

Thank you for this suggestion. I have, of course, already tried rebooting my phone, using a different phone, and using a computer to scan for devices. Unfortunately, the Bangle still doesn't appear in any scans.

I understand that issues like this are very rare. As a long-time user of Espruino products, including a Bangle.js v1, a Bangle.js v2, and three Puck.js's, I haven't encountered an issue like this before.

Thank you for your assistance and understanding. Please let me know if there's anything else I can try.

    Best regards,
    Evgeny

  • Hi Evgeny,

thanks for trying all the different possibilities. I sent you a private email and we'll sort out a replacement.

    Cheers,
    Christine
