...even with the new firmware? and it was fine on the older firmware?
I've tried on the 1v4 boards and they seem fine (crystal + capacitors). It's possible that without capacitors the oscillator ran for a bit and then stopped, and it's causing that function to get stuck somewhere else waiting for the RTC to respond.
