• As I understand it, there are pads on the underside of the USB connector on the Pico where we can solder a micro/usb header.

Where can I get those, and know that they'll have the right footprint? I'm gonna need a few of them.

  • Ahh, ok - so the ones I know that work (because I've soldered them on) are from the Seeed OPL.

But they're pretty standard. I'd be tempted to say that pretty much any SMD socket would fit as long as it has the right number of pads.

Mini USB is my preference - the socket is just that much stronger and is easier to solder.

  • Thanks!

Yeah - the MicroUSB has been... disappointing... in terms of durability. Which is disappointing, really - one of the main claimed advantages of Micro over Mini was improved durability - yet the micro USB connector in practice seems to be much less reliable than the mini.

(and, US digikey for mini: http://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/DX2R005HN2E700/670-1190-1-ND/1283605 )

Oh, the connector is usually totally undamaged. It's just what it's soldered to that's the problem :)

Pretty much all the consumer devices I've looked inside use a through-hole 4 pin Micro USB (like the rev 1v4) which seems a lot more sensible. It just sucks that the 2 pin SMD one doesn't come with a warning!

  • Got one on my prototype. This will work perfectly. Soldering those things on is a right bitch by hand - you need to get under an overhang to get to the pins. My normal iron is useless there, I have to use the mini one. It will be just perfect, though, for these little project boxes I got. I'll have OSH make me a board that I can solder the pico down to (with the end with the connector hanging off), and the box is the perfect size for a little 2x1.5" PCB, which should be just about what I'd expect to need for the basics, plus either a display or a battery. I've got one of the color digole serial displays coming that I will of course add driver and demo pics when I get it.

I got a crapload of little project boxes scavenging the corpse of radioshack (90% off, 35 cents a box on sunday. Came back last night, no more project boxes, but it was now $40 / liqour box of stuff.... Selection was limited ofc by now, but I got all the good stuff that was left. $1600 at sticker price (they had to ring it all up!) for $40.

  • Wow, that's amazing - shame there don't seem to be many in England, and none near me.

I spent quite a while trying to get stocked in Radio Shack - just as well it didn't happen now!

As far as soldering the USB, I find it's not too bad with some flux - then the surface tension tends to wick the solder right under the connector.
