Oh, the connector is usually totally undamaged. It's just what it's soldered to that's the problem :)
Pretty much all the consumer devices I've looked inside use a through-hole 4 pin Micro USB (like the rev 1v4) which seems a lot more sensible. It just sucks that the 2 pin SMD one doesn't come with a warning!
