I'm just looking into it here, and it seems that it's a bug in the app loader (that doesn't specifically affect Bangle.js 1). When you install Android Integration it installs Messages (which it needs) but it doesn't also install Message Icons (which Messages needs).
I'll fix that, but for now if you install Message Icons it should work for you
