I don't believe there's any special coating - it's just a (reasonably hard) glass on there (not plastic).
If you search for "removing scratches from glass" or similar there are a few options. As mentioned toothpaste should work for very mild scratches but it's not a very powerful abrasive so will take a long time.
I think for deep scratches you may be able to find something that will actually fill the scratch up.
