Hi Gordon,
Very stable WIFI and/or Ethernet connection with a robust IP stack should be a goal.
Tessel uses the CC3000 too. I'm wonder if they have issues too.
It has also a good part. When there was no problem with WIFI/Ethernet at all, i've never implemented a xBee module ;-).
