In general the PCB antenna is better than the ceramic one, except in situations where there's a metal enclosure nearby, or something like that.
The esp-12 have about 10dB better RF than the esp-01, a huge difference!
There are several versions of the esp-12 with slight antenna differences. The best ones have the same antenna pattern as the wroom-02 (produced by espressif). I ordered my last batch from http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Free-Shipping-10pcs-lot-ESP8266-remote-serial-Port-WIFI-wireless-module-through-walls-Wang-esp-12F/32471935022.html (for me ePacket shipping to the US is key). That photo shows the latest/best antenna pattern.
