From more research I am pretty certain that F401 Nucleo ships at 16MHz.
Discussion here about boosting it to 84MHz using mbed. Don't know how hard it would be to do this at initialization in the Espruino code...
@DrAzzy, it sounds like the board can run at 84MHz without the crystals, but I am far from a hardware guy...
